About Me
Hi, my name is Matt Roberts & currently I’m an MBA student at the Richard Ivey School of Business in London, Ontario.
Before going for the MBA, I was the co-founder of JohnnyVoIP an Ottawa based high tech start-up developing VoIP communication platforms for Web Applications. Also, while doing that and for the last 5 years I was an Analyst at Wesley Clover a prominent investor and successful manager of investments in Technology. We’re perhaps best known for being the investment company of successful entrepreneur Terry Matthews.
I’ve been involved in ‘High Tech’ since my first summer job as a teenager, and promptly used that experience to graduate from Carleton University with a History and Economics degree.
I worked for Newbridge Networks (bought out by Alcatel), an investment firm and served as an adviser (& consultant) to several financial groups, including Canadian VC’s, Boston based PE Funds and Toronto based Investment Banks. I’ve also volunteered time on the Boards of Not for Profits and Charitable organizations.
Professionally, I’m a mix of an entrepreneur and early stage tech investor, to invest in anything early I think you probably need to have that mix. I’ve raised money from Angels, but also from investment bankers or VC’s for Ottawa based start-ups. Like most, I have a mixed success record: several have gone public, several are still private and several crashed & burned. C’est la vie. While at Wesley Clover I was primarily involved in facilitating our technology portfolios as they grew. Today, I’m exploring my options and new horizons while I get a great education at Ivey.
